Virtual Payment Address (VPA)
What is Virtual Payment Address (VPA) in UPI
A VPA is a unique payment identifier used within the Unified Payments Interface to send or receive money without entering the recipient’s bank account number and IFSC code. It functions as a financial address that is mapped to a bank account through a UPI-enabled app.
A VPA normally follows the structure identifier@handle. The first part may contain a name, mobile number, or another available identifier. The portion after @ is the UPI handle issued through the bank or payment service provider.
Let’s see a regular VPA ID example: rahul123@sbi is a VPA format in which rahul123 identifies the user and @sbi is the handle.
Is VPA and UPI ID the Same
Yes, in normal UPI usage, VPA and UPI ID refer to the same payment identifier. VPA describes the payment address used within the system, while UPI ID is the term commonly displayed inside payment and banking apps. Both can be used as the address for sending and receiving UPI payments.

How Virtual Payment Address (VPA) Works
The Payer Enters the Recipient’s VPA
A UPI payment begins when the payer selects the option to send money and enters the recipient’s VPA. The application validates the payment address through the UPI system and may display the beneficiary information connected with it. The payer can then review the recipient details before proceeding.
UPI Resolves the VPA to Its Linked Account
The payer does not need the beneficiary’s account number or IFSC code. The VPA is already mapped to an eligible account within the UPI system, allowing the payment instructions to reach the account associated with that address. The banking information remains behind the payment identifier instead of being entered for every transfer.
The Payer Reviews and Authorizes the Payment
After entering the amount, the payer confirms the transaction using the UPI PIN linked to the account being debited. The PIN serves as the authorization credential for the transaction. A person receiving an ordinary UPI payment does not need to enter a UPI PIN merely to receive the funds.
The Transaction Moves Through the UPI Network
UPI connects participating payment applications and bank accounts through a common payment system. After authorization, the payment instruction is processed between the relevant participants so that money can move from the payer’s selected account to the beneficiary’s linked account. UPI supports immediate interbank transfers through participating institutions.
Both Sides Receive the Transaction Status
The application returns the transaction status after processing. A successful payment records the transfer and generates transaction information that can be used for later reference. Users should rely on the status shown in their own banking or UPI application when checking whether a payment has been completed.
Popular VPA Suffixes of Leading Banks in India
A VPA suffix is the handle appearing after the @ symbol. The handle is associated with the UPI provider or bank application that issued the payment address. It does not necessarily identify the bank holding the underlying account because some UPI applications can link eligible accounts maintained with other participating banks.

How to Create a Virtual Payment Address (VPA)
For most users, there is no separate VPA registration form. It gets created as part of the normal UPI setup. What you see on screen will depend on the app, though the account-linking steps are fairly familiar.
- Start with the UPI app you want to use.
It may be your bank's own application or another UPI app that supports Indian bank accounts.
- Use the mobile number your bank already has on record.
The app needs this number to find your account. It may also run a device check during registration.
- Pick the bank that holds the account.
Once the number is verified, select your bank from the list.
- Choose the right account when it appears.
If more than one eligible account is linked to the same number, make sure you select the one you actually want to use for UPI.
- Look at the UPI ID offered by the app.
Some apps assign one without asking. Others let you choose an available name or identifier along with a supported VPA suffix.
- Finish by setting the UPI PIN.
The bank will ask you to complete its authentication process before the PIN can be created.
- Find the VPA in your account settings.
After registration, it is normally visible in the profile, UPI section, or bank-account details inside the app.
How to Send Money via VPA
Sending money through a VPA removes the need to add the recipient as a traditional bank beneficiary or manually type the account number and IFSC code. The wording of each screen differs across applications, but the basic transaction sequence is similar.
- Open the UPI-enabled application and select Send Money, Pay, or the equivalent option.
- Choose payment through UPI ID or VPA.
- Enter the recipient’s complete VPA in the required field.
- Check the beneficiary information displayed after the VPA is validated.
- Enter the payment amount and add a note when required.
- Select the bank account to be debited if multiple accounts are available.
- Review the recipient and amount before authorization.
- Enter the UPI PIN to approve the transaction.
- Check the final transaction status and retain the transaction reference when needed.
Features of VPA (Virtual Payment Address)
Keeps Bank Account Details Out of Routine Sharing
A VPA can be shared for UPI payments without giving another person the linked bank account number and IFSC code. This reduces the banking information that must be exchanged for a standard VPA-based transfer. The VPA itself remains a payment identifier, so users should still verify where and with whom they share it.
Works Across the UPI Ecosystem
UPI is designed to connect accounts maintained with participating banks through UPI-enabled applications. A valid VPA can be used for payments between participating users without requiring both people to operate the same bank’s application.
Replaces Long Banking Details With a Short Address
The identifier@handle structure provides a simpler payment address than entering a full account number and IFSC combination for each transfer. A user can share the VPA to receive funds, while a payer can enter the address directly when making a VPA-based transaction.
Connects the Payment Address to a Bank Account
The VPA acts as the payment-facing identifier while an eligible linked account remains the source or destination of the funds. UPI applications can also provide access to multiple participating bank accounts. The way individual VPAs are created, assigned, and mapped to those accounts depends on the bank or application being used.
